Zoom video calling was previously banned in the country. However, in light of the recent crisis, it has now been made available. While Zoom is more of a conference or classroom kind of application, it can be used for video and audio calling near and dear ones around the globe. 3. Google Hangouts
This is another video and audio calling service. This was previously banned in the United Arab Emirates, however, has now been allowed by the country. This video/voice calling application has been made free for all Du users in the country. You can download the Du Voico UAE app on your phone or desktop, (available at apple and android stores). Du has released a statement expressing the importance of having contact with loved ones, and have hence released the free video calling service for all its customers. Voico UAE, features video/audio calling, texting, group functions and also comes with a translator. This is part of Du’s, ‘its good to be home’ campaign, which also involves other good deals at home.
5. Microsoft Teams
This is an online video calling platform dedicated specifically for work spaces and overseas conferences. This is a clear video calling application that is now made free and available for all to use, during this time. There are a number of new added in features. You can now raise your hands when you wish to speak, there is a bookings application and much more. This is ideal for classroom settings, and business meetings. Although this is a platform for meetings, etc, it can also be used to connect to friends and family.
6. Skype for business
This VoIP (Voice over internet protocol) application is very much used around the world. However, Skype for personal accounts is continued to be banned in the UAE. Business accounts can use Skype for meetings and conferences, and is absolutely free. This service was also previously banned, and is now being made available to all business.
7. Whatsapp Calling
Whatsapp calling has always been blocked in the UAE. Now however, whatsapp calling seems to be working on phones connected to the same wifi service. This means you can call your loved ones at home, from home. Not much use for keeping in touch with extended family members, but can be useful. Especially if you live in a house with stairs!
